چکیده

Virtualization can provide significant benefits in data centers by enabling dynamic virtual machine resizing and migration to eliminate hotspots. We present Sandpiper, a system that automates the task of monitoring and detecting hotspots, determining a new mapping of physical to virtual resources, resizing virtual machines to their new allocations, and initiating any necessary migrations. Sandpiper implements a black-box approach that is fully OSand application-agnostic and a gray-box approach that exploits OSand application-level statistics. We implement our techniques in Xen and conduct a detailed evaluation using a mix of CPU, network and memory-intensive applications. Our results show that Sandpiper is able to resolve single server hotspots within 20 s and scales well to larger, data center environments. We also show that the gray-box approach can help Sandpiper make more informed decisions, particularly in response to memory pressure. ! 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Automated Clustering of Virtual Machines based on Correlation of Resource Usage

The recent growth in demand for modern applications combined with the shift to the Cloud computing paradigm have led to the establishment of large-scale cloud data centers. The increasing size of these infrastructures represents a major challenge in terms of monitoring and management of the system resources. Available solutions typically consider every Virtual Machine (VM) as a black box each w...

Performance-Based Resource Allocation in Higher Education: A Black Box Containing the Paradox of Increasing Efficiency and Decreasing Productivity

To cope with escalating financial resource limitations from both expanding demands for higher education and experiencing a relatively reduction in public support, higher education units have profoundly adopted a performance-based resource allocation mechanism in recent years. Nevertheless, empirical evaluation findings show that the presumed improvement in performance has not been fulfilled. Us...

Resource management in IaaS cloud platforms made flexible through programmability

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds are becoming a customary way to deploy modern Internet applications. Many cloud management platforms are available for one who wants to build a private or public IaaS cloud (e.g., OpenStack, Eucalyptus, OpenNebula). A common design aspect of current platforms regards their black-box-like controlling nature, where cloud administrators have few opportunit...
